What AFRDI ratings actually tell you
AFRDI (the Australasian Furnishing Research and Development Institute) runs the Blue Tick certification program, which tests furniture against Australian requirements. For office chairs, two things matter most.
The level. Level 6 is the severe commercial rating, the top of the scale for demanding, high use environments. A lower level can be perfectly fine for a light use meeting room, but it isn't the right basis for a chair someone sits in all day.
The rated load. This is the user weight the chair has been tested to, commonly 110kg, 135kg, 160kg or 180kg across the commercial range. Some certificates also record a static load test well above the rated figure. Ratings are usually stated for single shift operation, meaning one person using the chair through a normal working day. If a chair will be shared across shifts, ask the supplier exactly what the rating covers.
One practical tip: AFRDI certificates carry a nominal expiry date. Ask for the current certificate rather than accepting a logo on a brochure, and check the status on the Furntech website if it matters for your project.
Hours of use matter more than most people expect
Many spec sheets state an indicative daily sitting time, and the difference between products is large. A stacking chair built for conferences and training rooms might be rated for three to four hours a day, which is fine for a session and wrong for a desk. Task chairs built for a working day are typically rated for six to eight hours or more.
The most common mistake in a large fitout is putting a light duty chair at a full time desk because the price looked attractive. Check the daily hours figure before you compare prices.
Weight ratings and who actually sits in the chair
A workforce isn't one body type, and a chair should work for the range of people who will use it. For shared or all day seating, a higher rated load gives more margin, and it is a useful signal of overall build quality. If a team includes taller people, look at high back options, and if it includes smaller users, ask whether a smaller seat size is available.
Mesh, foam or fabric
There's no single right answer, but there are sensible matches.
- Mesh backs keep air moving and suit warm rooms and long days.
- Moulded foam seats and backs give a softer feel and hold their shape under heavy use.
- Upholstered and PU finishes suit reception, boardroom and executive settings where appearance leads.
- Antibacterial upholstery is worth asking about in healthcare and aged care, where cleaning and infection control matter as much as comfort.
Adjustments worth paying for
More adjustment isn't automatically better, because features nobody uses are just cost. The ones that make a real difference are:
- Seat slide (depth adjustment): the single biggest fit improvement for people of different heights.
- Ratchet height adjustable back: puts the lumbar support where it belongs on each person.
- Independent seat and back tilt: lets people change posture through the day.
- Adjustable arms: worth it for keyboard heavy roles, optional elsewhere
Consider the mechanism too. A four lever chair gives fine control but needs a short introduction for new staff. A chair with a self weighting mechanism adjusts to the user automatically, which suits shared desks and hot desking where nobody wants to spend a minute setting up a chair.
Special environments need special chairs
- Aged care and healthcare: antibacterial, wipe clean upholstery, strong load ratings and long shifts.
- Labs, studios and drafting rooms: taller gas lifts and foot rings so people sit properly at raised benches.
- Education and conferences: stackable, linkable chairs that store away and move easily, ideally with a trolley for larger orders.
- Executive and boardroom: leather or PU finishes with a more refined profile.
Read the warranty properly
A ten year guarantee sounds excellent, but check what it covers. Frame and mechanism guarantees often differ from upholstery guarantees, and some fabrics carry a much shorter cover. A lifetime gas lift guarantee is a useful sign of confidence in the parts that fail first. Warranty lengths across commercial task chairs commonly run from five to ten years, so compare like for like.
Why buying locally matters for chairs
Chairs arrive flat packed, need assembly, and sometimes need a part replaced years later. That makes local supply more important than it first appears.
Creative Systems is South Australian based and runs its own installation team, so delivery, assembly and setup are handled in house rather than passed to a subcontractor. That typically means shorter lead times, lower delivery and assembly costs than many suppliers can offer on the same products, and one point of contact from order to final fit. For an Adelaide fitout with a fixed move in date, that reliability is often worth more than a small price difference on paper.
Common Questions
What AFRDI level should a commercial task chair have?
For chairs used all day, Level 6 severe commercial is the safest choice. Lower levels suit lighter use, such as occasional meeting room seating.
Is a cheaper task chair fine if people only sit part of the day?
It can be, provided the chair's stated daily hours match how it will actually be used. Check the indicative daily sitting figure and the rated load before comparing prices, because a chair rated for three to four hours will wear quickly at a full time desk.
Can one supplier handle chairs, delivery and installation for a large Adelaide fitout?
Yes. Creative Systems supplies, delivers and assembles task chairs with its own team across Adelaide and South Australia, which keeps lead times short and avoids the delays that come from coordinating separate installers.
Are there task chairs suited to aged care or healthcare settings?
Yes. Look for antibacterial upholstery, a high rated load and easy to clean finishes. Creative Systems has a dedicated healthcare and aged care range built around those needs.
Planning a task chair order for your Adelaide workplace?
If you're comparing chairs for a fitout, refresh or large order, Creative Systems can help you match the rating, mechanism and finish to how the chairs will really be used. Get in touch for a quote, or drop into the showroom to try a few in person.
