What does AFRDI Blue Tick mean?
AFRDI (the Australasian Furnishing Research and Development Institute, also known as Furntech is an independent, not for profit organisation. A product with the Blue Tick has had a sample tested for strength, durability, stability, workmanship and safety. For chairs, testing can also cover ergonomic and ignitability requirements.
For office chairs there is more than one performance level. Level 6 is the severe commercial level, built for very heavy use, and it’s often what government and education buyers ask for. Check your own brief for the level it requires.
Certificates are valid for three years and carry a nominal expiry date, so ask to see the current one and check its status on the Furntech website rather than trusting a logo alone.
What does rated load mean, and what is a single shift?
Most commercial chair standards only cover users up to about 100 to 110kg. AFRDI 142 rated load certifies chairs for heavier users, in five levels:
- 135kg, single shift: one 8 hour shift of use
- 135kg, multiple shift: use across more than one shift
- 160kg, single shift
- 160kg, multiple shift
- 185kg, multiple shift
A single shift rating suits a standard office day. Multiple shift ratings suit facilities that run around the clock, such as control rooms or care settings, where the same chair is in use for far longer. If your site runs more than one shift, make sure the rating matches.
What’s the difference between the Blue Tick and the Green Tick?
The Blue Tick is about performance and safety. The Green Tick is about sustainability, assessed under AFRDI Standard 150. It looks at the ethical sourcing of materials, limits on harmful chemicals, and design that reduces waste and uses water and energy responsibly in manufacture.
It comes in three levels, Silver, Gold and Platinum, with Platinum also covering operational energy, water and waste, corporate social responsibility, transport and packaging. AFRDI Green Tick is recognised by the Green Building Council of Australia, and may contribute toward Green Star requirements for eligible furniture products. The Konfurb Luna task chair, for example, carries AFRDI Green Tick Level B Gold alongside its rated load certification.
What does GREENGUARD Gold mean?
GREENGUARD, run by UL, certifies that a product meets strict limits for chemical emissions (VOCs) into indoor air. GREENGUARD Gold sets stricter limits again and is designed for schools and healthcare settings. UL notes that low VOC content doesn’t automatically mean low emissions, which is why testing the finished product matters. Certified products are retested each year.
GREENGUARD Gold is particularly relevant for schools, healthcare and aged care environments where indoor air quality is an important consideration. The Buro Roma SafeTex chairs are a good example, combining AFRDI Level 6, GREENGUARD certification and a 180kg rating.
What does BIFMA mean on a chair?
BIFMA is the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer’s Association. You’ll usually see ANSI/BIFMA X5.1, a test standard for general purpose office chairs. Ask whether a chair has been tested to the standard and whether you can see the report, because “tested to” and “independently certified” aren’t always the same thing.
Is Green Star a furniture certificate?
No. Green Star rates buildings and fitouts, not individual products. Furniture contributes through recognised certifications such as the AFRDI Green Tick, so if your project is chasing a Green Star rating, ask your supplier which products can count.
What do ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 cover?
These describe how a factory is managed rather than how a product performs: quality (9001), environment (14001) and health and safety (45001). They’re useful indicators of how a supplier or manufacturer is managed, but they don’t replace product specific testing and certification.

What does a certificate not cover?
One important point that’s easy to overlook is that a furniture certificate may not cover every material used on the product. An AFRDI chair certificate states that it doesn’t relate to the ignitability or durability of the upholstery. The seat foam and back may be tested for ignitability, but the fabric needs its own proof.
Ask for fabric results such as Martindale rub counts, colour fastness and pilling. The Capri 3 Seater Lounge is a useful example, with its fabric tested to over 40,000 Martindale rubs and a 4.0 colour fastness rating to light and washing.
What should you ask for on different products?
| Product | What to ask for |
|---|---|
| Task and visitor chairs | AFRDI Blue Tick level and rated load, GREENGUARD, BIFMA test report |
| Desks, tables and workstations | AFRDI certification for strength and stability, Green Tick if you need Green Star credits |
| Storage and filing | AFRDI certification for stability, durability and safety |
| Acoustic pods and panels | Tested sound reduction results, such as the SGS certified 29.5dB on the Bureau Quad+ |
| Upholstery | Martindale rub count, colour fastness, pilling results |
| Recycled or timber products | Recycled content figures, such as the 80% minimum in the frameless Acoustic Desk Screens , or forest certification for timber |
Quick reference
| Certification | What it checks | Where it matters most |
|---|---|---|
| AFRDI Blue Tick | Strength, durability, safety | Offices, government, education |
| AFRDI Green Tick | Sustainability, Green Star recognition | Projects chasing Green Star |
| GREENGUARD Gold | Low chemical emissions | Schools, healthcare, aged care |
| BIFMA X5.1 | Chair test standard | Office seating specifications |
| ISO 9001 / 14001 / 45001 | Factory management systems | Procurement and supplier checks |
What are the red flags?
- A certification logo with no supporting certificate or reference number
- A certificate for a different product name or model
- An expired certificate date
- “Tested to” wording with no report to back it up
- Claims that a structural certificate also covers upholstery performance without separate supporting test results
How do you check a certificate?
- Ask for the certificate, not just the logo.
- Match the product name on the certificate to the product you’re buying.
- Check the expiry date and confirm current status with the certifying body.
Why does this matter for government and procurement buyers?
Specifiers and procurement teams may need current certificates, test reports and supporting documentation for tenders, approvals or project sign off. For South Australian government and education projects, working with an Adelaide based supplier can also make product documentation, delivery and installation easier to coordinate. Creative Systems can help with product selection, supporting certificates, quoting, delivery and installation across Adelaide and South Australia, with short lead times and competitive pricing on available across selected ranges.
Common Questions
What does AFRDI Level 6 mean for a chair?
AFRDI Level 6 is the severe commercial performance level, designed for furniture that will see heavy everyday use. It’s commonly specified in government, education and other high use commercial environments.
What does “single shift” mean on a chair’s weight rating?
A single shift rating means the chair has been tested for use across one standard working shift. If the chair will be used across multiple shifts or for extended hours, look for a multiple-shift rating that better matches the environment.
Is GREENGUARD Gold the same as low VOC?
Not quite. “Low VOC” usually describes the materials, while GREENGUARD certification measures emissions from the finished product. GREENGUARD Gold applies stricter limits, making it particularly relevant for schools, healthcare and aged care environments.
Do I need a Green Tick to get a Green Star rating?
Not necessarily. Green Star rates the overall building or fitout rather than an individual furniture item. However, recognised furniture certifications such as AFRDI Green Tick can contribute toward the sustainability requirements of a Green Star project.
Does a chair certificate cover the fabric too?
Not always. Structural certification and upholstery performance are usually separate. If fabric durability matters, ask for supporting results such as Martindale rub counts, colour fastness and pilling performance.
Can I get certificates for furniture supplied in Adelaide?
Yes. Creative Systems can provide available product certificates and supporting documentation for furniture supplied across Adelaide and South Australia. If certification is part of your tender or project brief, it’s best to let the team know early so suitable products can be specified from the start.
